The Burton Cup competition began, fifty years after the Wood Cup, in 1971. It's a straight knock-out tournament for Second Division teams in the Central Lancashire League. It was first won by Stockport who beat Oldham in the final, before going on to win the Second Division and Aggregate Cup in the same season. Eight time champions, Milnrow, have had their name on the trophy more frequently than any other club. It was shared for the only time in 1973 by Royton and Middleton, when the final could not be completed. We have have only won the cup once, in 1976, but we have finished runners up in 1971, 1985 and 1999. It runs parrallel to the Wood Cup, and similarly has previously required byes to be awarded to some teams, to allow for an irregular number of entrants.
